Annotation

The relevance of the article is due to the growing popularity of an environmentally responsible lifestyle and responsible waste management. One of the aspects of this way of living is waste sorting (colloquially known in English as recycling, although it is a different process). Waste sorting possesses some vital advantages: only sorted waste can be recycled, and recycling saves resources and prevents pollution of the Earth. Among the methods of involving the civilian population of Russia in separate waste collection are waste sorting events (hereinafter — WSEs). This article examines whether such events attract new people to waste sorting. The objectives of the study were to collect the data about the number of people visiting WSEs and the amount of recyclables collected. As a method, a comparative analysis of the effectiveness of WSEs in 2022 and 2024 was used. The results of the study show that the amount of recyclable materials and the number of people who attend the events increase annually, while the average mass of recyclable materials handed in by any participant during the event remains virtually unchanged. The data obtained imply that WSEs really attract new people to separate waste collection and are an effective method of improving waste sorting and recycling rates in Russia.
