Annotation

The article examines the evolution of scientific views on the possibility of sustainable development from the first ecological and economic ideas to the modern paradigm enshrined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Special attention is paid to the spatial dimension of sustainability, theoretical approaches (neoclassical, institutio nal, evolutionary, geographical) and their applicability to the sustainable management of territo- ries. Based on the analysis of Russian and foreign sources, key contradictions in the imple- mentation of the SD concept, the role of geographical science in its development, as well as modern challenges (climate change, pandemic, geopolitical tensions), transformative de- terminants of SD have been identified. The dialectical contradictions of the SD concept, the manifestations of its simultaneous utopianism, dystopianism and realism are shown.
