Moscow in 2024 is the largest agglomeration in Europe. A key challenge for this district, and many modern megacities, is achieving sustainable socio-economic development, requiring improvements to the urban environment and quality of life. The Western Administrative District of Moscow is one of the 12 territorial units of the capital. The district is experiencing rapid growth, with a rising population, redevelopment of former industrial areas, significant new housing construction, and expansion of transportation networks., local and regional protected areas are being created. These factors together strongly influence the ecological situation of the whole district. Therefore, on the example of the “Landscape Reserve ‘Ramenki River Valley’ created in 2018, this paper considers and reveals the role of local object of protected area in maintaining the natural-ecological conditions of a large administrative unit of the metropolitan agglomeration.
