Annotation

The toponymy of Taimyr is an almost unexplored area of interdisciplinary research. Against the backdrop of the Russian state’s renewed interest in the Arctic, it is particularly relevant to intensify efforts to fill the gaps in scientific knowledge about this important region, including deciphering the meanings encoded in the toponymy of the territory, which reflects the experience of life support and sustainable development. Using cartographic, comparative-geographical, linguo-geographical, and other methods, specific examples are used to demonstrate that there is an unquestionable connection between the processes that accompanied the development and settlement of the northern part of Central Siberia and the naming of its geographical features. The article shows how and in what way it is possible to identify the hidden meanings in toponyms, which are nothing more than mental monuments. It is especially important to trace this connection in the territory where, due to objective reasons — harsh climate, inaccessibility — there are practically no material cultural monuments. In this work, for the first time, the role of the toponymic approach for Taimyr is revealed, including in the study of geocultural space, toponymic zoning is performed, and the direct connection between the naming of geographical objects in the process of territory development and the semantic reflection of the meanings embedded in their names is shown. Thus, the toponyms of Taimyr act as indicators of the events and processes that accompanied the formation of the geocultural space of the northernmost Russian Arctic region.
