The comprehensive transformation of the renewable energy system of the EU
(European Union) at the turn of the XX–XXI century led to the allocation of the NRE (new
renewable energy). As a result of the revealed multidimensional heterogeneity of the EU
itself and the different levels of influence of these factors on the subregions and EU member
states, it was found that the development of the network of NRE facilities is largely une-
ven. It depends primarily on the size of the economy, as well as the geographical location
and the level of availability of its own energy resources. These conclusions were based
on the use of statistical analysis methods and Kendall correlation analysis. The spatial
disproportion identified in the study leads to the need to differentiate EU member states
based on their level of electricity production in the NRE subsystem and the overall deve-
lopment of NRE. This differentiation demonstrates a high level of correlation between
GDP as the main macroeconomic indicator and the gross level of electricity production
in EU member states, as well as the fact that GDP is one of the key indicators that reflect
the capabilities of EU member states for the development of NRE. This indicates serious
complex problems in the development of NRE, the nature of which reflects the complex set
of problems of the EU as a whole. These problems demonstrate that the level of dependence
of the EU on hydrocarbon imports will remain high, and the level of energy security will
remain low, despite the EU’s plans to overcome this situation. In this regard, the EU needs
to focus on ways to overcome the high degree of heterogeneity of NRE, rather than achie-
ving general key indicators. This requires a more comprehensive approach to development,
taking into account the high degree of differentiation discussed in this article.
