The standing vertical jump is a key motor action in basketball and largely determines performance in rebounding, shot blocking, and offensive play. Nevertheless, in practice and in many studies, “jump ability” is often reduced to jump height assessment, without examining the biomechanical structure of the take-off phase. The aim of this study was to investigate the dynamic structure of a standing countermovement jump with an arm swing (CMJas) in collegiate basketball players using force plate analysis. Seven male athle tes (19–23 years) performed one maximal CMJas with an arm swing; ground reaction force data were collected using a Bertec force plate at 1 000 Hz. Twenty-eight biomechani- cal variables were calculated, including force-, time-, spatiotemporal-, and power-related characteristics. For the first time in applied assessment, the jump data were additionally represented in force-velocity coordinates, enabling the identification of individual jump pro- files. Correlation analysis revealed both expected and non-obvious relationships, including the influence of body mass on the interpretation of force metrics and a “paradoxical” nega- tive association between eccentric-phase force indicators and key jump outcome variables.
